LORD FINESSE - THE AWAKENING (Penalty Recordings, 1995)
The Awakening is a great album, full of classic dope beats and features some great collaboration tracks with artists such as Oc, Krs-One, Ag and Diamond D to name a few. Production wise I cant fault this album. The beats are full of deep funky bass, sampling from many soul and jazz songs, great vocals and rhyming and a certain funky sound that you expect from a Lord Finesse album. Witness the Dopeness!
FUNKDOOBIEST - BROTHAS DOOBIE (1995)
This is absolutely better than most stuff that is dropping these days. This album produced by DJ Muggs is one of the best I’ve bought. Although lyrics are explicit indeed, the humor of the band really works out well. Son Doobie and Tomahawk Funk with their dj Ralph M find the right tunes and very interesting decisions in composing songs and though make this doobie-speeching masterpiece worth buying. Buena compadre!
PETE ROCK & CL SMOOTH - THE MAIN INGREDIENT (Elektra, 1994)
This is a friggin Masterpiece! The smoothest/laid back rap albums you’ll ever hear. Pete Rock’s amazing production matched with C.L.’s addictive and intelligent rhyming make an highly enjoyable and memorable collection of tunes. This is one of those rap albums that hits you in a way that makes you remember exactly what you’re doing and where you were when you heard it for the first time. Anything less than 5 stars for this album borders on blasphemous. I recommend making this album a collection cornerstone.
GRAVEDIGGAZ - 6 FEET DEEP (Gee Street, 1994)
Probably one of the hardest hip hop album recorded, “6 Feet Deep” is one of the mid ‘90’s underated best. Sick dark and eerie beats, spooky polyrhythms and creepy lyrics. Those lyrics accompany the beats perfectly. The overall atmosphere of the album is unique and mesmerizing. There are plenty of classics on here. The record is interesting, wacky and humorous, yet no less amazing.
JERU THE DAMAJA - THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST (Pay Day, 1994)
Groundbreaking album! This is a brilliant music investigation with odd hooks, perfectly scratched upchoruses and the grittiest funkiest beats pounding away in the background. Jeru, the metaphysical battleground rapper (able to make funky rhymes out of intellectual hyperbole) and Premiere with his rawest, deepest and most daring beats can be found here. True classic!
DONATO DOZZY - DONATO DOZZY PLAYS BEE MASK (Spectrum Spools, 2013)
Italian producer Donato Dozzy remix the same track, “Vaporware,” in seven different ways: space-scapes, rainy laments and techno tangles. Poetic, psychedelic and endlessly inventive. The atmospheric side of one of the most consistent producers of real bonafied techno.
µ-ZIQ - BILIOUS PATHS (Planet Mu, 2003)
This album will give you goosebumps from the first scene. Energizing, emotional and synaesthetic. Breaks to spread into your ears, then into your brain, and then to all your senses. Filled with those crazy breakbeats and all those good old school jungle noises you never get tired of.
ED RUSH & OPTICAL - WORMHOLE (Virus, 1998)
A seminal work and absolutely-bleepin’-essentialin drum’n’bass. Dark but quirky/funky tunes with very moody basslines… absolute a synthetic heaven!!
DREXCIYA - NEPTUNE’S LAIR (Tresor, 1999)
A funky steel drum-like xylophonic jazz groove with an incredible electro feel for one of the most important techno album of all times! James Stinson and Gerald Donald make a “dimensional jumphole” between their black African roots and the contemporary USA.
DJ RASHAD - DOUBLE CUP (Hyperdub, 2013)
High-BPM tempos, disorienting bass lines, and hypnotically repetitive approach to sampling form the perfect soundtrack for the juke-derived footwork style of dancing, which favors fast feet and athletic skill… Instant classic!
